“From the fortress to the megapolis”
Chisinau city tour

The history of our city begins in the 15th century, but scholars have disagreed on the year of its foundation. According to one version, it was called the year 1466 when a settlement with that name was mentioned in a donation letter. According to another version, the first mention of a settlement with that name appears in the charter of the Moldavian Governors Stefan and Ilya in 1436.

When speaking about Chisinau, ancient monuments like fortresses, which can be found in Soroca, Bendery, and Old Orhei, are not commonly remembered. However, on one of the earliest city plans, an interesting object can be found. In the area of Saints Constantine and Helena Church (the place of the city’s foundation), there are outlines of a large fortification where ceramics from the 17th century and fragments of Golden Horde dishes from the 14th century were discovered.
Can we consider Chisinau a fortress? Which streets have preserved the traces of famous people from the past? You will hear and see, and we will tell and show!
